Suzuki Violin Method Book 4 - Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor

Suzuki Violin Book 4 - Vivaldi Concert in A Minor

Here is another popular song from the Suzuki Violin Method Book 4: Vivaldi Concerto in A Minor. It's one of my favorite songs from book four. You can visit the user of this youtube account here. (Or you can click on the youtube icon on the video below). He has a lot of videos showing a close ups of the fingerboard. I find this helpful because it teaches me when to shift to different positions.

Slowing Down YouTube Videos

A great feature of youtube is the speed setting that can be found under supported videos. You can slow down the video if you are not able to keep up with the original speed.

To do this click on the gear icon of the youtube video: You should see a drop down option for speed. I recommend changing the speed to 0.5. You might lose the audio if you set the speed too high.

Note: You may have to visit the actual video on youtube to use the speed settings. I do not know if the embedded video allows the speed settings to work.

Lightly Row - Suzuki Violin Volume #1

In the past few months, I've had the opportunity to teach a couple of adults from the Suzuki Violin Volume 1 book. Whenever I teach, I always make sure to teach students how to read music notes. I usually have students write the note names above each note. As students progress through pieces they eventually memorize them.

Sometimes I love showing them videos like this, however.

It sort of reminds me of Guitar Hero. I think it would be really cool if somebody invented a lighted violin (Like those light-up pianos that teach you songs).

I've seen several videos by the author of these videos. They are great for beginners who are visual learners.

Vivaldi Concerto in G Minor (Book 5) Video

Here's a great video online that I found for Vivaldi Concerto in G Minor (1st Movement) - The same song in my previous post.

Since I'm not great with positions, I simply downloaded this video using a Youtube downloading website, and opened up the video in the VLC video player for Mac OSX. This player has a slow down feature which makes it very easy for me to play along with the song and figure out when to switch to other violin positions.

To make it easier to see where the violin player is putting his fingers on the fingerboard, I simply invert the screen colors on my screen to be negative. This works out quite well because when the video is in negative colors, the fingerboard appears white, and the strings appear darker (A dark grey color).

I wish this same user would make videos like this for all of the songs in Suzuki Book 5. They are so helpful because the angle of the video makes it easy to see the entire fingerboard.

Welcome to Violin Virtuoso!

This is the first post for my blog! I am a self-taught violin player who has been very happy with the Suzuki Method. I was introduced to the method in mid-2005 and I've been learning from it ever since.
My goal with this blog is to share tips, favorite videos, and perhaps even some personal sheet music that I have collected over the years. (Perhaps I'll post a cool fiddle song that I enjoy very much).

The image below is a logo I had created for a website I made in my web development class. (The website was called Violin Virtuoso). I had a bunch of images and files on my hard drive and I thought it would be cool to get an actual blog up on the internet where I could post all my stuff.

Since I am self taught, I usually rely on Youtube videos to get my techniques right. I think I'm quite addicted to these videos. Something I've been searching for is help on violin positions. If anyone has any way to describing them (Perhaps with an image or pdf) I would be thankful. I'm currently learning songs in Suzuki Violin Volume 5, and knowing when to change positions based on the numbers above the notes is a little confusing. I've gotten the hang of it sometimes, but it's always a good idea to ask for help when you need it right?

This is professor pizzicato. He's a violin wizard I had designed by my friend, Lidia Garcia for my violin website back in college. He's holding his little pal Mr. Rosin. Sadly, in other pictures, people thought Mr. Rosin was a hotdog. Those days bring a smile to my face.

Suzuki Violin Volume 5- Concerto in G Minor - Antonio Vivaldi

Here is one of my favorite songs from Suzuki Violin Volume 5- Concerto in G minor (1st Movement) by Vivaldi. I think it's the third piece in the book. I'm learning this movement, but knowing when to switch to different positions is tricky. Luckily, I have youtube videos to see these changes.

I'm also looking for videos that have the piano accompaniment to this piece. If you go to the website called www.groveshark.com you can type Suzuki Violin in the search field and you will get several Suzuki Songs in a playlist. If you search every album and artist, you will be able to find a lot of users that have uploaded piano accompaniments to Suzuki Songs (From Book 1 and even some ranging all the way to book 8).

I'm learning the next movement adagio, but I want to focus on perfecting the first movement because it's very beautiful.

This piece (Along with the other three movements) are available on this free music database:

It's nice having a free database to access sheet music!
